Sambar rice or sambar sadam is an easy to prepare delicious one-pot meal. Making sambar rice is similar to making Bisi bele bath. only the taste is different. Sometimes I make the entire sambar sadam recipe in a pressure cooker.
To begin with this recipe, we have to first prepare a few ingredients. You can have sambhar rice using 24 ingredients and 5 steps. Here is how you can achieve that.
The ingredients needed to make Sambhar rice:
- Make ready for masala powder:
- Get 2 spoons urad dal
- Get 2 spoons chanadal
- Take 1 spoon dhaniya powder
- Take 2 cloves
- Make ready 1 inch cinnamon
- Prepare 2 cardamom pods
- Make ready 1 marathi moggu
- Get 5 red chillies (adjust according to spice)
- Take 3 spoons dry coconut
- Make ready 2 onions sliced/ 10 shallots baby onions
- Take 2 tomatoes cubed
- Get 1 spoon Tamarind paste
- Get as required Salt as required
- Take 2 spoons oil
- Make ready 1 spoon ghee
- Get 1 cup rice
- Make ready 1/2 cup toor dal
- Make ready 1 spoon Moong Dal
- Prepare 6 cups water
- Prepare 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
- Get few Curry leaves
- Prepare for Veggies:
- Get as required Carrot, beans, potato, chayote, green peas, Drumstick
sambar sadam recipe with step by step photo and video recipe. basically, sambar rice is combination of rice and sambar which is cooked with vegetables. in other words, sambar rice is prepared by cooking together the lentils, vegetables, rice and sambar powder. due to its simplicity and amazing taste, it is very popularly served in many south indian restaurants. especially for breakfast, lunch and dinner with tomato onion raita. As the name says, here sambar and rice both cooked together and served as a meal. This recipe is from Tamil cuisine. There is another similar dish called bisi bele bath which is from Karnataka cuisine.
Steps to make Sambhar rice:
- Add the ingredients of the masala powder except dry coconut into a pan and roast it until golden colour with a spoon of oil. In a mixer jar first grind dry coconut and then add the roasted ingredients and grind it to a fine powder.
- Wash and Cut all the veggies as shown in the pic. Into a pressure cooker add in oil and mustard seeds and let it splutter. Now add in the sliced onions, curry leaves and sauté.
- Add in all the veggies, tomatoes and green peas and fry for 2 minutes. Add in the Tamarind paste and sauté.
- Add in the masala powder and mix well. Now add in the washed rice and dal to it and add required amount of salt. Add the water and a spoon of ghee and pressure cook it for 2 whistles.
- Allow the pressure to release and mix it up. Serve it hot with Aloo chips and Kara Boondi or Appalam.
Sambhar Rice or Sambhar Sadam is a regular day affair from Tamil cuisine. A mash made with Rice and Toor / Arhar Dal, cooked together with exotic Indian spices and tamarind, finally tempered nicely with ghee and other spices. Curry leaves add a lot of nutrition value and flavor to South Indian cuisine. Add the turmeric,sambar powder,asafoetida and the chopped veggies. When the vegetables get cooked,add jaggery,the ground sambar powder and bring to boil.
