Take a pan put 2- 3 tbsp Oil heat up then add mustard seeds, cumin seeds after it starts crackling add chana dal, urad dal, after it turns brown in colour add chopped onions and cook until golden brown then add ginger chilli paste mix well add salt to taste mix well and then put it in idli batter.
  3. Add soda in the batter and mix well. Adjust the consistency by adding water.now take appe pan heat up then fill it with 1/4th oil in all the rounds then add batter to it and cook on medium flame from both sides. Serve with coconut chutney.

I have added more bananas than what is generally added in appams. The design of this appam maker is such that it requires to be cooked in very less oil, which makes it ideal for calorie conscious people.
